SUMMER IN THE PARK WEEK 5  29th MAY 2009
The penultimate round of the series saw warm and blustery conditions with the half term holiday reducing the total number of riders to 17.
First up were the under 8s with Ben Tullet of Herne Hill YCC leading from the start and keeping a safe distance from Sion Margrave of Team Darenth in second. Lewis King claimed third spot having chased hard to try and catch Sion. Joseph Blackmore took 4th spot and riding in his first ever race was Fred Conder coming home 5th.
The under 10s had a field of just 4 riders but without Dan Tullet who was again riding up in the under 12 race. This meant Toby Martin of Team Darenth would go clear from the start and slowly pull away from his younger brother Nathan who was safe in second place. A strong ride from Tyler Pace of Team Darenth ensured 3rd spot and Sam Holloway claimed 4th place following a crash earlier in the race.
8 riders lined up for the under 12 race which set off at a very quick pace. Daniel Tullet of Herne Hill YCC, Tristan Price of PCA Ciclos Uno and Sam Titmarsh of team Darenth quickly moved away from the rest of the field.
After 3 laps Sam had dropped back and it was down to two riders to contest the win. Hannah Kane of Southend Wheelers was safe in 4th spot with James Hopwood and Patrick Faint of Team Darenth not too far behind. James rode a strong race and was able to pull away from Patrick. Further back Luc Legon and Blake Eley were having their own battle.
As the race came to its climax all but the first two positions had been settled. Tristan had moved just ahead of Daniel as they rounded the final corner and sprinted for the line. Tristan had just enough of a lead as he crossed the line just ahead of Daniel who was closing all the time.
Well done to all who took part and I hope to see you at the final race next week.

SUMMER IN THE PARK WEEK 3  15th MAY 2009
The third round of the series started with grey skies and ended with torrential rain. However this didn’t deter the largest field so far with 27 riders signing on.
First up were the under 8s with a dry track and blustery conditions. Ben Tullet of Herne Hill YCC led from the start and managed to keep a safe distance from the hard chasing James Biscoe. Third place went to Lewis King just coming home ahead of Sion Margrave of Team Darenth in forth spot having swapped positions twice during the race.
The under 10s had a field of 9 riders but without Dan Tullet who was racing up in the under 12 race. This meant Toby Martin of Team Darenth would go clear from the start and slowly pull away from his younger brother Nathan who was safe in second place. Third place was held by Sam Holloway of Team Darenth for several laps before Oscar Heath-Stephens put in two fast finishing laps and took the final podium position.
The start of the under 12 race saw spots of rain fall and as the race progressed so did the rain. By the time the race drew to a conclusion the rain was falling steadily and the course had become very wet. Racing continued at a good tempo with riders taking due care on the corners but not losing much time overall. Within two laps of the start four riders had ridden away from the field and began to jostle for position. Lap after lap the four riders swapped places but no one seemed willing to try and make a move.
As the race neared its climax Joe Sutton of team Darenth lost touch with the lead riders. Joe went on to claim 4th spot with his best time so far.
The final 3 places would be decided on the final straight. Sam Titmarsh of Team Darenth managed to gain a few yards at the back of the circuit over Dan Tullet of Herne Hill. Callum Mackie of Lea Valley was chasing hard and looking to be part of the sprint finish. As the riders rounded the final corner Sam was able to hold off Dan in the sprint to the line with Callum just two seconds behind.
A great race from start to finish with Dan showing he is more than capable of mixing it with the under 12s.
Well done to all who took part and lets hope the sun shines next week.

SUMMER IN THE PARK WEEK 2  8th MAY 2009
More wind rather than sunshine this week but 22 riders signed on from
5 different teams along with some unattached riders new to racing.
The under 8s race was won with a strong ride from Ben Tullet from Herne Hill closely followed by James Biscoe just 9 seconds behind. Third place went to Sion Margrave of Team Darenth getting on the podium for the first time.
The under 10s race saw Dan Tullet of Herne Hill win by a smaller margin from Toby Martin of Team Darenth. This was in part due to Dan saving some energy for a big race the following day. Third went to Nathan Martin and first girl was Lucy Titmarsh finishing 4th overall.
Sam Titmarsh of Team Darenth was again to lead from start to finish in the under 12 race. Joe Sutton also Team Darenth chased hard but ended the race a minute behind. Hannah Kane Southend Wheelers and Bailey Sticking Go Ride Bexley had a great race with Bailey slowly closing Hannah down as the race progressed. Both riders took the final turn looking to take third spot. Hannah had the strength to take third with just 2 seconds to spare.

Report from Round 1, Southern XC Series

The first round of Southern XC in 2008 there was four inches of snow on the ground this year it was dry hot sunny, what a difference a year makes. The course at Borden in Hampshire is one of those places that everyone loves. It’s got it all, fast flowing single track technical climbs and descents just one of the best cross country courses in the south.  Putting in their first appearance at this year’s series where Nathan and Toby Martin. The two of them were be to competing in the under tens race which was to be two mini laps through the woods. Toby was first off the start line with is trade mark of his legs going around at about a million miles an hour (change your gears). Nathan was close behind his brother with the rest of the field following along at a fast pace. Toby came through the start area first with Nathan several seconds behind and the third and fourth boys not far back. Toby won the race with several seconds to spare on his brother, but Nathan had the third placed rider coming up fast on the inside of him. Nathan crossed the line first with only feet separating him from the third boy. The juvenile race was next up with Liam Cowell and Gretel Warner in this one. They would be doing the full course which was taking the fast riders twenty two minutes to complete. Liam had a good start and was up with the leaders, Gretel was at the back of the field. Liam and Josh Parkin where locked together for nearly all the race with them changing places several times. It came down to a sprint finish between Liam and Josh which Liam held to the line to take sixth place overall. Gretel was having a ding dong with the boys, due to no other girls to race against. This did not stop her; she still managed to come in eleventh in the boy’s race which is always hotly contested.

Report from round one of the British mountain bike cross country series on Sunday 4th April at Sherwood pines near Nottingham. The weather could not have been better for racing dry hot and dusty, what it should be like. Today’s event had sold out with over five hundred racers over all the age categories.

The course was just over 8kms in length with a mixture of fire roads and single track sections. It was taking the greyhounds just over twenty minutes to complete a lap, so for the mere mortals this would mean a time of around twenty five minutes or so. For Gretel Warner and Liam Cowell this was their first time competing as juveniles at a national event. Liam was to be gridded last due to no previous ranking points which was to place him on the last row of the thirty five or so other riders. Gretel was to fair a bit better even so she was ranked last, due to there was only ten girls in total. Liam was going to do two full laps of the full course sixteen kms, or ten miles for us oldies. Gretel was stunned when informed she was also to do two laps, normally the girls only do one lap. Liam was to go through the start loop area first, he was going well. I shouted to him to keep the pace steady and not to overdo it otherwise he would blow on the second lap, which sometimes happens. Gretel came past a while later in seventh place; she was looking a bit worse for wear. She told me after her race that she had taken a tumble on a rooty section in the woods and had banged her leg which came up in a big black bruise the next day.

As Liam came round for the last quarter of the second lap, he was keeping up a steady pace which was pulling him gradually up the field. Gretel was in full swing by now on the second lap and she was in position to pass the fifth rider to take the fourth spot which she did. Liam was to take fifteenth place only forty seconds behind ex team member Josh Parkin. Gretel and Liam will be contesting at round two in Dalby in North Yorkshire in May where they hope to improve on the first round results.
